Raising £5,000 towards
building a Children's Home in Thailand |
|
|
There was a
special presentation at Holy Family on Wednesday, 21st.
July during the UCM Coffee Morning.
Andy Shilcock and his wife, Val were presented with a
cheque for money raised by the UCM
towards the work they do
with the street children in Thailand.
They gave a presentation about their work illustrated
with photos and a DVD showing.
They have
lived in Langley for over 25 years,
have 4 sons and also serve on the board of trustees for
the Foundation. |
|
Andy and Val are trustees of Glowing Life Foundation, a
Thai registered charity, formed to improve
life conditions for children at risk living in Northern
Thailand.
|
|
|
They felt the call to Thailand in
2005 and relocated to Chiang Rai, North Thailand in
2007.
Since then, they have been very active in working with
the street children at the Burmese border, helping to
love, care, feed and teach them, whilst at the same time
building hope into their lives.
Val, a former teacher, has also been helping care for
people affected by HIV/AIDS as well as teaching English
as a Second Language (ESL) while Andy also teaches ESL
and has been heavily involved forming the foundation
The Glowing Life Foundation is established to help
children and young people who are vulnerable in society.
This includes orphans and other very needy children who
could be at great risk if lett to fend for themselves. |

The Foundation aims to
provide a loving, stable and safe family environment in
its homes for the people who live there. It will seek to
teach life skills, develop vocation skills in addition
to supporting school education. Its goal is to see the
young people transition from the home as mature,
confident, law abiding citizens who are able to manage
their emotions and their responsibilities |
The Foundation was founded in
December 2008 and raised enough money to buy
approximately 2 acres of land in June 2009. A DVD
was shown today illustrating the progress of
construction of the project.
The trustees have designed a house that will
accommodate up to 30 children and also includes
carers and house parents accommodation too. It has
an area to be used for eating, playing and teaching
etc. A kitchen, laundry area, storage and a
compulsory office is also included.
It is double story and the total floor space is
almost 400sq m. The cost including labour but not
fittings is approx £40.000. |

|
|
Official plans
have been approved and although the foundation has
only 51% of the funds needed, work was
started mid March 2010.
The target is to raise the remainder of the money by
October as the building work is expected to complete
around then. |

At the end of the
presentation
Jean Stribbling
thanked
Andy and Val for coming along today
and hoped they will
return with an update
in the months ahead. |
