for Diabetes UK

When young mum Melanie Mynett began planning her 30th birthday party 18 months ago she had no idea how her life would change over the next year or so. Her little boy, Jacob had been unwell for almost two years but Doctors could not diagnose what was wrong with him, On November 20th 2007 Jacob, then just 4 was diagnosed with Type 1 Insulin dependant Diabetes. Melanie and Jacob’s life changed from that day on.

Jacob needed 3 Insulin injections a day, needed his blood tested regularly and a very strict diet.
Once, over the shock Melanie decided that her party was no longer for her birthday but would become a fundraiser for Diabetes UK to help fund research into Diabetes and treatments.
She asked all of her family and friends to make donations to Diabetes UK instead of buying her presents.

Melanie, Jacob and a group of friends also did a sponsored walk in Marlow, which raised several hundred pounds for the charity.

Since Jacob’s diagnosis Melanie’s life has changed so much because Jacob’s diabetes is still unstable and she feels that she must be with him.
The responsibility is tremendous and their family is very proud of them both.

Coincidentally, Melanie’s 30th birthday actually fell on World Diabetes Awareness Day on November 14th.

Melanie thanks the committee of Holy Family Social Club for allowing her the use of St Anne’s Hall for the function.
