CHANGE
AT THE ST. THOMAS A BECKET FOUNDATION
An Announcement from the
Very Rev. Kevin O’Driscoll,
Chair of Trustees |
|
|
During its life the Foundation has
had to change to meet different circumstances.
The Foundation began with the aim
to provide accommodation for young people with disabilities who wanted
independence, but who also wanted to live in a Christian environment.
We had
some success. In partnership with Midsummer Housing Association we built nine
homes for sale on the basis of shared ownership, each one designed for people
who had a range of disabilities. At the same time substantial progress was made
in designing and funding a residential home. |

|
However, in the end formal support
was not forthcoming from the local authority once government policy had changed
from residential homes to “care in the community”.
After much deliberation the
Foundation decided to concentrate on pastoral care. Sister Marie Power was
employed as a pastoral worker and once she left, her work was taken on and
expanded by John Bonner and Angela Davies.
All three cannot be thanked enough
for what has been achieved. |
|
However, we are not immune from the financial
difficulties that are affecting the world at the
moment. We were particularly supported by the
Diocese and a charitable trust.
Both these major contributors
have seen income from their investments fall as
interest rates have tumbled and they find that they
can no longer support us in the way that they have
over the last few years. |

|
We have made applications to other trusts, but we
find that they face high demand for their more limited funds.
Therefore we have to announce that
the Foundation cannot continue in its present form and we have to say a
reluctant goodbye to John Bonner and Angela Davies.
They go with our heartfelt
thanks.

We continue to have the
support of the Diocese and their help during this difficult time cannot be
overstated. With this support and with the goodwill of the people of the Diocese
we will continue our work as best we can. Trustees and supporters will be
meeting soon to discuss how we may do this. |
