St. Thomas ŕ Becket Foundation |

|
making a
difference |
|
|
 |
|
 |
|
The St Thomas a Becket Foundation
was
founded over ten years ago
by people who
live in the
Roman Catholic Diocese of
Northampton.
It is a charitable trust that
works
within the boundaries of the Diocese,
to be of assistance to people
with
disabilities, of any,
or no, religious
faith. |
|
|
|
Its aim is:
To make a
positive difference
to the lives of those with a
disability,
and to their families |
 |
It mainly does this by: |
|
|
|
|
Providing support to individuals and their
families,
and to parishes
of the Diocese.
Assisting and advising the
Diocese in meeting its requirements
under the Disability Discrimination Act.
Co-ordinating and supporting
a network of parish representatives.
Developing pastoral services
and the RE curriculum for
children in special schools.
Ensuring that awareness of
disabled people is maintained
throughout the Diocese as a whole |
|
Maggie Nichols, the mother of
26-year-old Catherine who
has hydrocephalus, short-term memory
loss and is
partially-sighted, said:
"People rely on the Foundation.
It's wonderful to have them taking such
good care
of the disabled.
Everyone is special to
them." |
|
Wheelchair user Georgia
Devine, 34, was diagnosed
with
cerebral palsy at nine
months. |
|
|
She lives with carers at her bungalow in
Farnham Royal and is a full-time ICT
student at the East Berks College in
Langley.She
is full of praise for the work done on
her behalf by Sister Marie Power and the
Thomas a Becket Foundation. " Marie is a
lovely, lovely lady - totally
incredible. She's been so very
supportive and has actively helped me on
a whole range of issues. She has also
been a shoulder to cry on." "The World
Youth Day trip in 2005 was an experience
I'll never forget. We were caught up in
the BA disruption. |
|
|
|
Finally we got away, but our luggage didn't arrive in Cologne.
But we got through it all and came out smiling.'

|
|
 |
|
The Foundation also cooperates with
many people in
the Diocese to ensure that disabled
people are fully
involved in milestone events, such as
First Communion
and Confirmation. |
|
| How you can help
the Foundation to make a
difference |
|
Support, or become, one of our Parish
Representatives. |
|
We aim to have a full network of trained people,
at least one in every parish, who will act as local
contacts, monitors, and advocates for the disabled.
No qualifications are
necessary, apart from a
heart for those who struggle with things we
take for granted about our Churches !
Offer a bit of time. |
|
|
|
We have many roles
for volunteers, from making
appeals in parishes, to helping with catering at
events, to taking someone shopping or on a
trip out, or giving an occasional lift.
We can use
what you have to offer. |
|
Bless the
work financially |
|
We have so
many expenses and could always do so
much more than our funding allows.
