22nd June, 2008
Theme:     Light
Thought: 'This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!’

The 21st of June is the longest day of the year.

It is called the Summer Solstice.
The word “solstice” means “sun stands still”.  For those living in the northern hemisphere, the Summer Solstice is the day on which the earth, spinning on its axis, has its North Pole ‘tipped’ as far as it will go to face the sun.
Because of this ‘tipping’ towards the sun, the northern hemisphere receives the longest hours of daylight of the year.

For Christians Light is a very important symbol.

Christians believe that Jesus is their guiding ‘light’ showing them how to live through his example.
Sometimes Jesus is called the ‘Light of the World’.
As Christians we are encouraged to recognise the Light of Christ in the world, in ourselves and in others.  There is an old saying:

“Be like the sundial that records only
the light and goodness of the day.”

Reading: Recognising Jesus walking beside us [Emmaus] – Luke 24:13-35.

You might feel like singing one morning.

Here are a few lovely hymns:
Colours of day; I watch the sunrise; Morning has broken; Walk with me; Yahweh, I know you are near; This little light of mine!

If you feel so inspired the words to these hymns can be easily found at www.hymns.me.uk

Prayers:

Monday.
Let’s pause to think for a moment of individuals who have been very special for us, in whom we have  “recognised the light of God in human form”.  Amen

Tuesday:
Let’s pray for our faith communities That we may learn to recognise the light of God in others today.  Amen

Wednesday:
Father, teach us to bring light to the people you put into our lives today. Amen.

Thursday:
Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world. Let us never cut ourselves off either from the light and life that you give to us, or from the good influence that others have on us.
When we encounter darkness in our lives, enable us to bring to it the light that we already have within us.  Amen.

Friday:
Lord, lead me to look for the positive in all people and in all situations. May I help bring light to those in darkness,
and encouragement to those who feel unhappy. May I show as much care for others as I would like them to show for me. Amen.
